Ale is a drink made of fermented barley, although sometimes more generally referring to other fermented herbal drinks as well; originally the distinction between ale and beer was that beer contained hops (passim).

During the medieval times, ale was a main source of grains in their diet. Ales helped to act as a preservative and provide the proper nutrients that people needed in their bodies. Due to their fermation process, ale had lower pathogens and thus became safer to drink than water.
